"Breaking Silence to Change Hearts, Minds and Policies"

Guest speaker:  Erika Duncan, Founder and Artistic Director of Herstory

Can a story make a difference? Can it heal our broken communities and hearts? We invite you to join Herstory Writers Workshop’s founder and director for a hands-on immersion in a technique that has given voice to high school students who crossed the border by themselves, children of the incarcerated, and young people struggling with poverty, addiction, family and neighborhood violence, mental illness and hatred of newcomers arriving in our land.

Please join us to learn about a unique pedagogy that has changed the lives of thousands of Long Island students and their families, giving hope and a voice to young people who have been marginalized and unheard, while changing the attitude of teachers, school counselors, school boards and administrators, one story at time. We invite you to participate in a dialogue about how this tool kit that has given voice to thousands of previously silenced Long Islanders can become a vital add-on in the creation of a school culture of empathy and inclusion, igniting a spark for expression and activism where other more conventional approaches to writing have failed.
